How to provide effective data supports for designers and even ordinary users

This project launched in January 2017 by the School of Design, Hunan University. The major goal was to construct a scalable, interactive and minable repository of 3D Chinese facial data available to designers and researchers, which will contain facial measures and 3D images focusing on Chinese people. This project involved the collection of 3D facial surface images by using state-of-the-art 3D scanning technology on 300 healthy Chinese individuals drawn from the general population. Quantitative facial measures were extracted from the 3D images and it is hoped that such a database will facilitate novel research initiatives on wearable product design.

DESIGN BRIEF

Background

With the development of wearable devices and virtual reality technology in recent years, more and more head-mounted products have come out. Product design has increasing demands on data about the head size. However, the current head database for the Chinese population is not perfect. The dimensional data required for the design comes mostly from the modification and adjustment of the foreigner’s head model data, resulting in the absence of accurate and effective data to support the design of smart wearable products (such as helmets, glasses, headphones, etc.). Therefore, the research of this subject is of great significance for a future ergonomics project.

Uneven distribution of gravity:

Uneven stress distribution to the head causes pressure.

No sight adjustment:

Not convenient for glasses wearers.

Partial light leakage:

Nose bridge design does not meet the characteristics of Asian nose.

Mouth:

Light leakage or air leakage, not fitting, high pressure.

Heavy and large equipment:

Difficulties in moving and turning head cause pressure on the cervical spine.

Mismatching between device and head shape:

Uneven contact due to the mismatching with head shape.

Visual fatigue:

The projection lens adopts a fixed focal length and angle, leading to visual fatigue after wearing for a long time.

High pressure in the nose pad area:

The nose pad is hard and has a small contact area with the skin.

The glasses data match the major foreign chain products. There is no fixed data and no concept of percentile. Customer can adjust the nose pads to meet his own needs.

Traditional optical products are of little significance, but the 3D full-frame data requirements for smart glasses may be higher.

An Asian’s head is wider than that of European

Different companies have different customer groups. Most of the designs rely on their own data accumulation. The new size does not match the market need and may be excluded. If some sizes are too novel, there is a certain risk of uncomfortable wearing. The application of these data is relatively invariable. Most designs innovate in the decoration of the temples and eyebrows, and the size will not change much.

RESEARCH

Competitive Analysis

Query Website:

The amount of general data is large and requires a very detailed classification.

Problems:

The query entry is not obvious, the visualization is poor, and maybe only professional designers are proficient to use the website.

02.png
03.png

3D Model Website:

Both the classification and the query entry are obvious, and the color is rich.

Problems:

A little dull because most presentations are in the form of pictures

At first, it was assumed that the website would be presented in the form of an APP on the iPad, and the memory could not be reduced in the process of data sorting due to the accuracy of the head model. This prevents the ipad from running in real usage scenarios. Therefore, the final solution was changed to the web version, and the responsive design was implemented, that is, both ipad and mobile terminal are operable.
